Wallet Wednesday: Booking hotel rooms

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)- If you haven't made lodging plans for the holidays or maybe you're looking to go on a last minute trip, we wanted to see what the best options were for booking a hotel room.

Experts say if you're booking last minute, look to book during the cancellation period for hotels. Usually it's 24 hours before the reservation. That's typically the cheapest you can find rooms.

Use technology:

Hotel Tonight is an app that was started with the last-minute booker in mind. You can book a few days out on this app, and it works with hotels to fill empty rooms.

Hotwire.com is another option. This one can be a little tricky. You're given the price, star rating and approximate location of the hotel, but you don't know which hotel it is until after you book it.

We tried both and found the prices were lower with Hotwire, but the fees are higher (almost twice as high) as Hotel Tonight.

You also can join a loyalty program, which gives you points that add up over time.
