2 Tsp olive oil or butter, divided
6 bratwurst sausages
2 large sweet onion, sliced into ¼ inch rings
3 apples, peeled and cut into wedges
6 oz beer
Heat 1 tsp oil (or butter) in a large dutch oven. Brown bratwurst until deep golden brown. Do not puncture sausages. Remove and reserve. To the drippings, add the remaining oil and the sweet onion rings and apple wedges. Toss to coat with the oil and cook, stirring often until the apples are soft and the onions are limp and golden but not browned. Return bratwurst to pan and add the beer. Cook over medium heat, turning midway through until beer has cooked down to a syrup (about 12 to 15 minutes). These are good served on buns with the onions and apples or as an entrée.
Note: this same method with work with almost any link sausage. Different kinds of beer can give a whole variety of flavors to the dish.
