1 pound lean ground beef or ground chuck
¼ cup brown sugar
2 tsp garlic powder
2 tsp onion powder
1 ½ tsp fennel seed
2 tsp oregano
1 tsp thyme
1 small onion
1 bell pepper
1 TBSP red wine vinegar
1 TBSP Worcestershire sauce
2 cups tomato sauce
2-3 TBSP tomato paste
1 tsp kosher salt
1 tsp black pepper
Buns or rolls


In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef, breaking up pieces with a wooden spoon. Drain any fat, and add sugar, garlic powder, onion powder, fennel seed, oregano and thyme. Stir well to combine. Add onion and bell pepper and cook for about 3-4 minutes, or until onion becomes fragrant. Add red wine vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, tomato sauce and tomato paste. Bring to a boil and reduce to a simmer, and simmer until sauce has reduced and thickened. Serve on toasted buns.
