Gingerbread Men Thursday, December 15, 2011

1 cup butter
1 cup Sugar
1 cup Molasses
1 tablespoon Vinegar
1 large Egg beaten
4 cups Flour
2 teaspoons Baking soda
1 teaspoon Salt
1 teaspoon Cinnamon ground
1 teaspoon Ginger ground

Cream together butter and sugar thoroughly. Heat molasses to almost boiling and pour over margarine mixture. Mix in vinegar. Cool to lukewarm. Add egg. Sift together flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger. Add to cooled molasses mixture, stir together well to form dough. Chill dough overnight. Preheat oven to 350 deg. Roll out dough to about 1/2 inch thickness and cut into desired shapes. Decorate as desired. Bake for 8-10 minutes. Do not over bake.

Tip: If you do not have a gingerbread man cutter, sketch a gingerbread man on parchment paper. Cut out the sketch and place on the dough. Cut around it with a sharp knife. For decorating, I have been known to buy the cake decorating icing in a can in the baking section at Food City. Use the tips that come with it and have a great time. My grandmother would let me shape small pieces of gingerbread dough and stick them together to make my own gingerbread men. Instead of using icing, we stuck raisins or cut up pieces of candied cherries for the decoration. See, you have lots of choices.
