Volunteer Spirit: 12 year old uses birthday to acquire shoes for others

HAMBLEN COUNTY, Tenn (WVLT) -- When a 12 year old asks for shoes for her birthday, some may question it.

But Jim Smith says that's just the way his daughter Caitlyn is.

"It's amazing that today in a world that we live in, it's all mine, mine, mine. That someone this young wants to give. That makes me feel proud, very proud, according to Jim.

Caitlyn Smith says, "Instead of getting money and presents, because I have everything in the world that I need, I just asked for flip flops."

Flip flops, and not even for her.

For people who need them .

Her birthday was back in May

"My first goal was 60, I thought I was going to get 60 but it went up to 100, then it went up to over 100," she says.

Her Uncle Walt showed her pictures from his mission trip to Nicaragua last December and she felt the urge to help.

"He said stuff about their feet and how they have to walk on the rocks and it hurts them. So, I had to do something. I have so much and they have so little. I would just like to help them," Caitlyn adds.

People kept donating, and now she has more than 500 pairs of flip flops stuffed in several duffle bags.

Her Uncle Walt will take them to a village called Somatillo in Nicaragua on October 6th, that makes his third mission trip there.

"I love it actually, I love helping," she says.
