Volunteer Spirit: Knoxville Zoo salutes service men and women

KNOXVILLE, Tenn Everyone loves a trip to the zoo no matter the age, and with or without kids.

And every Independence Day weekend, the Knoxville Zoo offers free admission to some special guests.

Tina Rolen says, "This includes not only active military and national guard as well as veterans. Plus, police, fire, EMT, paramedics, civilian service members as well. Retired and active."

All you have to do is bring proof of ID.

"This is something we can do, a small thing that we can do to say thank you," says Rolen.

Zoo guest and Army veteran, Bart Peek says, "I appreciate it, I do. I spent four years in the army during world war II. I lived through that and I am still here."

Rolen adds, "Fourth of July is typically a time you spend time with family, so we're hoping they take advantage of this offer and spend some family time with us."

And if you do, you get to meet the Knozville Zoo's newest resident, A komodo dragon called Drogo.

"He's six months old and still growing, but big in attitude. So, don't let the small stature fool you. He has a big attitude," Rolen explains.

And if dragons aren't your thing, there are more than 750 other animals waiting for you to stop by.

Service workers get free admission tomorrow and Sunday as well.
The Knoxville Zoo is open from 9:30-6:00 everyday. Next-day admission is free after 3 p.m.
