Volunteer Spirit: 90 year old Pink Lady says helping others is the key to longevity

DOWNTOWN KNOXVILLE, Tenn (WVLT) - February 26th, Margaret Weeks turns 90 years old.

And there's no stopping her.

She still volunteers 2 hours every Monday morning at Fort Sanders Regional Hospital.

The Pink Lady (as they are referred to) started, well, they figure about 50 years ago, when the hospital didn't really keep records.

Weeks makes money for the hospital by selling items from a cart her helper Chip Parker pushes from floor to floor.

Chip says, "she's the boss and I'm the horse. She's a sweetheart to work with but she is a pusher."

The money they collect buys items like defibrillators and recliners for patient care, and other equipment.

Weeks says the best selling floor is the baby floor. The 6th floor.

But before even before she gets to the customers, she pauses in front of the nursery and grabs a glimpse of the newbies.

"I always look at the babies. They're so cute and little," smiles Weeks.

The gifts and goodies that are big sellers include gum cigars in blue or pink, ribbons with "It's a Boy" or "It's a Girl" printed on them.

And she is quite competitive.

Weeks says, "Last week our opponents, because we always try to beat them, made 27 dollars and we made 114, so we did much better than they did."

Paula Minhinnet, the Volunteer Coordinator says Weeks stands out and they appreciate her commitment to the hospital.

She went on to say they don't even have records of when Weeks first began, but are honored to have her.

Minhinnet says, "She is from that greatest generation the women who stayed at home and took care of there children and gave a day of volunteerism at their church, school and hospital."

And now, as she turns 90, Weeks has this advice.

"Keep going and try to do something for somebody else, which i think is very important."

She also hopes that others will step up and volunteer to run the cart, as they desperately need help.
