Volunteer Spirit: Donating time at MEDIC

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)-- He's been helping to save lives for more than 50 years. R.E. Cooper isn't looking for rewards or thanks; he donates his time and more so others can live.

R.E. Cooper has been a faithful Medic donor for over 50 years. It all started after he left the army in 1958 but it was his sister who really inspired him.

"She helped to get Medic started and she would have probably shot me if I didn't join up." he says.

When we met him, this young 74 year old was donating for the 254th time and he says he just keeps coming back because it might help someone in the long run.

Medic can always depend on R.E. because he's on time for every appointment.

He says, "I don't like to leave somebody hanging somewhere or waiting on me."

Therefore, he spends an hour and a half of his day donating. Susan Hubbard, an apheresis says "He makes our day. He's here for a special cause. He knows what he's doing. He knows he's helping people. He knows he's giving life to somebody else, and it's something that he is passionate about."

We asked him if he has always been helpful and he said that he didn't think he was that helpful. He was just doing what he said he would do.

He's a modest man who give his time and life to others and that is why he is our Volunteer Spirit of the week.

He says, "Everybody should go if they can not partially for themselves but to help other people."
