Volunteer Spirit: Costume contest supports families of Kidz Team

KNOXVILLE, Tenn (WVLT) -- Bryan Butler and his family have a passion for kids with cancer.

He and his wife Donna started Kidz Team in 2006.

Bryan says,"That's where we all work from the heart. Every dollar we get goes to the families of newly diagnosed cancer patients that come to East Tennessee Children's Hospital."

The non profit organization provides those families with a backpack or what Butler calls an emergency kit, "Chances are when the families are being notified your baby has cancer, the families are being given the bag and they say, you're going to need this."

They're filled with gift cards for nearby restaurants, information on cancer, toiletries, and toys among other necessities.

"They don't tell you pack a bag because you're going to be there a month, they just tell you to go. Because if they tell you your baby had cancer, you couldn't be able to drive, you just can't, " according to Butler.

He couldn't when his 16 month old son Bryan Butler II, was diagnosed with the adult form of leukemia.

"I had to pull over and throw up."

Butler's son died at the age of five.

Kidz Team was formed in 2006, after his death.

It's helped about 300 families, by giving them these bags filled with supplies and support.

Butler adds, "We know what these people are going through. It probably helps us more than it helps them, knowing that we can help give back."
