Volunteer Spirit: Life jacket loaner program available at several marinas

LOUDON COUNTY, Tenn (WVLT) -- Cruising the lake is a way of life for many in East Tennessee.

But safety needs to be first.

Chad Walters of Sea Tow says, "State and fed law requires a jacket on board for everyone, but people need to realize not only do they just need a life jacket, they need to fit."

Another problem, boaters often end up with unexpected guests.

Bret King says it happens all the time at Fort Loudon Marina in Loudon County.

"We always run into the situation especially on holiday weekends like Rockin' the Docks" where a lot of people come down on boats and they end up having extra people and only life jackets for 10 and they need 12, says Bret."

Problem solved!

Thanks to Sea Tow's Life Jacket Loaner Program, based on the honor system.

The on the water assistance company has placed two life jacket posts at Fort Loudon Marina.

One is at the gas dock and the other can be found at the dry storage facility.

The life jackets are available during marina hours only.

Just return it that day or as soon as you are done using it.

There are several sizes for adults, down to even tiny ones for tots.

Walters says, "Folks show up (to friends' boats) with children and it takes away the temptation of trying to make a life jacket that doesn't really fit the child."

Sea Tow started the life jacket loaner program at Concord Marina last year.

The loaner life jackets are also at Caney Creek Marina on Watts Bar Lake.

"It's worked real well, stays real busy, and the public has been real good about bringing the vests back, according to Walters."

Sea Tow's volunteer spirit with the life jacket loaner program is just another option for boaters to be prepared and keep their guests, safe.
