Volunteer Spirit: Suit Drive

Posted: Fri 3:38 PM, Mar 09, 2012

KNOXVILLE, Tenn (WVLT) -- If you have any men's suits, slacks, shoes, shirts, and ties that are in good condition and not being worn, Men's Wearhouse wants them!

It's for a nationwide Suit Drive. Locally, the drive will benefit the Volunteer Ministry Center in Knoxville.

VMC helps poor and homeless people get back on their feet.

Karol Harper says, "We want folks to feel good about themselves and give them some dignity."

A new men's suit, on average, costs about $400. Harper says many of the clients are out of work, and cannot afford to buy a suit for a job interview.

"It's very very hard to walk into an interview when all you have are shorts and a t-shirt.," According to Harper.

Men's Wearhouse (stores) is collecting the slightly used suits, etc until the end of the month.

Lucas Scott, Assistant Manager of Men's Wearhouse, "You don't want to give anything that is not presentable to wear. Obviously you want to make sure there aren't any holes in it or anything like that."

The store will have the items cleaned before they donate them to VMC.

Men's Warehouse is throwing in a tie with every suit donated.

Scott adds, "We want to help as many people as we can, in any way we can."

Customers donating men's items will receive a 50 percent off coupon to be used at the store.

VMC will hand out the suits in September, with special appointments with clients.

Harper says, "The suit drive is a great thing. The guys who get the suits walk a little taller and actually feel they have a shot at the interview they are going on."
