Volunteer Spirit: Young adults share the spirit of Christmas with the sometimes forgotten

WEST KNOXVILLE, Tenn (WVLT) -- Its a special treat for the people who live here at Hillcrest West Health and Rehab in West Knoxville.

Gail Seeber says while making a Christmas card with a volunteer from a bible study group, "I'm having a great time. They're spending a lot of time with us, yes, it means a great deal."

It's a night out of their lonely bedrooms into the lively activities room, with caring teens, most from Fellowship Church.

They are here spreading holiday cheer.

Ashley Rutherford says "Our bible study group decided we wanted to serve in the month of December. Our friend did some research and that they needed some time to help with Christmas cards, so we ended up here to spend some time with them."

Michelle Surgenor the activities director says, "Some don't have family that comes to visit. Some of them do. We try to make sure they have activities on a daily basis to make sure they stay motivated. Anything to keep them busy and improve their quality of life."

Meg Cockrum says, "I am super thrilled, I love coming down here and doing volunteer ministries like this. And today I made triple chocolate chunk cookies."

And while the cookies and hot cocoa made this gathering extra sweet, simple conversations stirred plenty of smiles for the seniors, as well as these girls and guys, because they have volunteer spirit.

Ashley says, "I think it's great we get to share a little time even for an hour or two, and show them someone does love them."
