Volunteer Spirit: not your average "Barbershop" singers on tour

KNOXVILLE, Tenn (WVLT) -- Thirty minutes before their performance at the O'Connor Senior Center and members of the Smoky Mountain Show Chorus are getting tuned up.

They sing gospel, pop, and even broadway show tunes.

Anna Miller, assistant director says, "It's a group of ladies who really enjoy singing and we sing in the barbershop style."

And the all women chorus not only sings, they educate.

Miller says, "Barbershop music is a Capella and vocal music writ en in specific style used in seventh cords, and what barber shoppers like to do is ring bunches of cords."

There are 33 members in the group- on this day about 15 make it for the show.

The spectators, are Seniors for Creative Learning.

Doug Hubbard a member says, "We're a group that gets together for educational purposes and to keep ourselves mentally active. 55 and older is only requirement."

And the chorus is the kickoff to their new season.

"Oh yeah, this is a great group," adds Hubbard.

The show chorus is a nonprofit group that mainly tours senior centers and assisted living facilities.

And they're always looking for more newcomers who can carry a tune.

The SMSC is part of Sweet Adelines International, A Worldwide Organization Of Female Singers.
