MARYVILLE (WVLT) - The Battle of Maryville became an all-out war Friday night, and yet again the Maryville Rebels emerged unscathed.
Maryville (5-0) won its 50th consecutive game, 20-19, over rival William Blount on the Governors' field Friday, in what may have been the stiffest test of its three-plus-year reign over Tennessee high school football.
The Governors (4-1), who have not beaten Maryville since 1999, scored what looked to be the game-tying touchdown with less than two minutes left in the game. However, a missed extra point left them inches from tying the contest.
Maryville ran out the clock, fortunate to add the victory to their long list of conquests.
William Blount led 6-3 after a first half which showcased both teams' staunch defenses. But a flourish of big plays in the second half led to a topsy-turvy finish. Late in the fourth quarter, the Govs got deep into Rebel territory thanks to a long run, and Darrin Garner finished the drive with a scamper around the end and across the goal line. That led to the missed extra point, and the narrow Maryville escape.
Things don't get any easier for William Blount. Next Friday the Govs host Farragut (4-1), who will be looking to rebound from an upset loss to McMinn County, 24-21, in its last game.
Maryville will look to continue its streak when it hosts Central Friday. The Bobcats made a tradition out of finishing second in the region to Maryville until last year; this season, second place would be very welcome in Fountain City.
