Knoxville (WVLT) - Fred Thompson is the newcomer to the GOP debate, and the big question Tuesday night --did he hold his own? With more than a year to go in the presidential campaign, all nine Republican candidates faced off in Michigan.
WVLT Volunteer TV's Liz Tedone has a recap of the 90 minute event.
While Thompson has been criticized for an underwhelming start to his camp, and was noticeably uncomfortable at times on stage, critics are saying he held his own on the issues.
At one point, Thompson was literally stuck in the middle of fellow candidates Mitt Romney and Rudolph Giuliani as they fought at length over taxes. Thompson appeared amused, but overall his responses were measured and according to political analysts, substantial.
"I think his personality seems to be a little bit more careful, a little bit more cautious, and again, while I think it's a reasonable thing, a lot of voters are turned off by people who are that thoughtful and comtemplative. They are more turned on by the we can do it, America's a great place," UT political science professor Anthony Nownes said.
Political enthusiasts are saying Thompson needs to lighten up a bit in future debates, in his personality and in appearance, and that because of his acting roles, voters may have more gregarious expectations of him.
