Drought A Boon For East Tennessee Well Drillers

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) -- The drought is a problem for farmers, firefighters and homeowners, but it's proving a boon to well drillers.

Bob Keith of Casey Well Drilling and Pump Service in Jonesborough says he's booked through the end of the year by people wanting wells sunk.

Many are farmers who depended on springs to water their livestock and now the springs are drying up because of the lack of rainfall.

Agricultural extension agent Anthony Shelton says he's even heard reports of some wells drying up in Washington County. He also says some creeks that normally run year 'round are starting to run dry.

Keith says he's also heard about some wells going dry, but says the ones he's heard about are shallow wells of 100 feet or less.
