MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Former University of Tennessee cancer research specialist Dr. Marcello Arsura has been sentenced to three years in prison on drug charges.
Arsura resigned in January from his post as a pharmacology professor at the UT Health Science Center in Memphis.
He was sentenced yesterday by federal District Court Judge Bernice Donald, who also ordered Arsura deported to his native Italy after he serves 35 months in prison.
Deputies arrested him at his home in May of last year and found methamphetamine in small plastic bags along with prescription drugs, a small amount of cocaine and a set of scales used to weigh drugs.
Arsura told the court he failed many people and was paying the consequences as he should.
