LOCAL 8 WEATHER ALERT: Strong to severe storms are possible Tuesday afternoon and evening, especially on the Plateau. The main threats are damaging winds, heavy downpours, and frequent lightning.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn (WVLT) -- A wind advisory has been issued for the higher elevations of the Smoky Mountains until 5 pm today.
Winds in the mountains may gust as high as 50 mph and in the valley we'll see winds up to 30 mph.
Along with the gusty winds we'll continue to see occasional showers and cloudy skies.
Our pilot, Pete Michaels, says in 30 years of flying he's never encountered such strong winds at relatively low altitudes.
While trying to fly at speeds of 115 mph into the wind, he is being held to just 25 mph of actual movement.
That reaffirms the reason for the high wind advisory for the mountains for today.
The chance of rain will remain in the forecast for the next few days.
By the time Saturday arrives, we should begin to see clearing skies and drier weather for the weekend.
