(WVLT) - An East Tennessee infant battling a rare form of cancer has died.
Just two months after Mackenzie Grace McMahan was born in June of this year, doctors diagnosed her with Rhabdoid cancer and removed a tumor and a kidney.
The four-month old died Saturday morning at East Tennessee Children's Hospital in Knoxville.
A fundraiser had already been planned at The Point Restaurant in Dandridge and organizers decided to hold it as planned.
It turned into a celebration of Baby Mackenzie's short but touching life.
"We all love Baby Mackenzie, but we also feel like Mackenzie is in such a better place and she touched so many lives in the four months that she was here, than most of us will in an entire lifetime. And we are here to celebrate her life and we feel like she is here with us," said event organizer Ashley Epling.
"There's definitely a sadness," said friend Kermit Easterling. "But, you know I feel the joy with them too, that she has gone to a better place.
Mackenzie's mother, Megan, family and friends will start a foundation in Mackenzie's memory to help other children in their battle against the disease.
