ROGERSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- The TBI is investigating the shootings of a young Greeneville man and a teenage girl who an officer had been pursuing.
Authorities say 20-year-old Joseph Fortenberry took off when Rogersville police officer Ken Ferguson tried to stop him for driving recklessly Saturday evening.
Police say the officer pursued the couple into a dead-end cul-de-sac, where Fortenberry tried to run over him.
Ferguson and Hawkins County Deputy Scott Stewart fired, striking both occupants.
Both are still in the hospital.
Fortenberry was shot in the chest and shoulder. His 16-year-old passenger was reportedly struck in the head.
Both officers are on routine leave while the incident is investigated by the state agency.
