MARYVILLE, Tenn (WVLT) -- A Maryville woman has been killed in a apartment fire in Blount County.
Family members confirm the victim is Dyan Foulks, 60.
Foulks died in a fire inside an apartment at Scenic Terrace Apartments.
The Maryville Fire Chief tells Volunteer TV News just after 2:30 this morning, they received a call from neighbors who told them they saw smoke and fire coming from the apartment.
"I called 911 and they told me to knock on everybody’s doors and get them awake on that side of the building and get them out,” said Melissa Gredig, a neighbor and the first person to call 911. “So I did that and the guy that lived right across the hall, I asked him if he would kick the door down. So he kicked the door down and we were going to try to go in, but there was too much smoke."
When firefighters arrived, the apartment was engulfed in flames.
Firefighters were told someone was still inside the apartment and tried to go in and save the victim, but it was too late.
Family members say Foulks was battling against breast cancer.
She was a native of Mississippi, but had lived in East Tennessee for more than 20 years.
They say she had physical conditions that limited her activities.
The state Fire Marshall has been called in to help figure out what started the fire.
Eight residents were relocated as a safety precaution.
