Friends Remember Maryville College Coach Killed IN Car Accident

Maryville, Blount County (WVLT) - Following the Thanksgiving holiday, students at Maryville College will hold a memorial service for a football coach that died in a campus traffic accident Monday night.

Maryville Police say 25-year-old Shawn Jeremiah Cody Bowers of Madisonville died in the accident.

25-year-old Jack "Trey" Lefler, of Loudon, and 24-year-old Matthew Lambert of Maryville, were taken to UT Medical Center.

Investigators say speed was a factor in the accident, and they're still trying to determine if alcohol was involved.

Chief Tony Crisp says Bowers hit a tree on a small campus road where the speed limit is 20 minutes per hour.

Cody Bowers family will receive friends Friday from 5:00 until 8:00pm at the Biereley Hale Funeral Home in Madisonville.

The funeral will be Saturday at 11:00am at Biereley Hale Chapel.

Interment will be held in the sunset cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Loudon High School athletics department or the Maryville College athletics department.

The accident is devastating for those who knew the three young men.

Trey Lefler and Cody Bowers were standout athletes at Loudon High School.

Cody was the Redskins' quarterback, and Trey was one of his receivers.

Matthew Lambert is from Rome, Georgia.

Those who knew Bowers say he was the kind of person that touched the lives of everyone he met.

"I called Cody Bowers the technician. Everything he did was perfect. Trey was the same way.", said Loudon Football Coach Jeff Harig.

"It's a tragic day for Maryille College and our thoughts are prayers go out to the young men inovlved and their families.", said Maryville College Athletic Director Randy Lambert.

Trey's dad is an assistant basketball coach at Loudon High School.

Tuesday night, they cancelled their game so he could be with his son.

Coach Harig says Cody and Trey gave him one of his favorite football seasons.

That was their senior year when they led the team to the state quarter finals.
