Knoxville (WVLT) -- Most of us try to save a little money this time of year, so we can afford everything on our Christmas lists. Something that could help you save a few dollars is the new prescription card available to all Tennesseans.
Volunteer TV's Medical Reporter Jessa Goddard has the details on what the card means for you.
It is a free discount drug card that provides average savings of 30% on the cost of prescription medications.
There are no restrictions on who can use it and there's no application process.
About now, you're probably asking what's the catch?
Whether you're one of the 800,000 Tennesseans without health insurance, taking medications not covered by your health insurance plan, or paying the full cost of your medications at the pharmacy, the new Tennessee drug card could be the cure for your drug costs.
Long's Drug Store is one of about 900 participating pharmacies in Tennessee.
"Generally the way it works is someone would just print this off the internet, bring the information into us, we would put that information in the computer on their profile and actually try to fill their prescriptions to see just what the benefit would be," said pharmacist Hank Peck.
The only requirement is that you are a Tennessee resident.
Whether you are insured or uninsured, the benefit will be the same.
Averaging 10 - 20 % for brand-name drugs and 30 - 40 % for generics.
Either go to www.TennesseeDrugCard.com and fill out the form and you'll receive two membership cards.
You can also go to a CVS Pharmacy and they will process it for you.
It's so easy, Long's Drug Store pharmacist Hank Peck expects people to be a little skeptical.
"Generally things that are too good to be true, are. And the best way to find out if you're interested is just to bring something by, and we'll check it and we'll find out if there's a significant savings," said Peck.
CVS, Walgreens, Rite-Aid, Bi-Lo, Eckerd Publix and dozens of other pharmacies are participating in the Tennessee program, administered by the United Networks of America.
To help you determine whether the Tennessee drug card will save you money, you can look at the medication discounts that are available and the list of participating pharmacies.
