Thanksgiving Halliday: Bulldogs Reach State Semis

KNOXVILLE (WVLT) -- The Bearden Bulldogs' season motto has been to "finish the movie."

While a state championship would certainly not ease the pain of losing head coach Bill Wilson to a heart attack last April, there would be no sweeter end to a season which began so bitterly.

Friday, the Bulldogs took another step on the road to the state title, outlasting the archrival Farragut Admirals, 28-14, to advance to the state semifinals for the first time in school history.

Running back Torey Works led the way for the 'Dawgs, scoring all four Bearden touchdowns, including two in the fourth quarter to seal the win, Bearden's first since 2001, ending an eight-game Admirals win streak. But every game has been close; the 14-point win ties the largest victory margin by either team in the series this decade.

Dawson Halliday provided capable leadership at the quarterback position, and will need to be just as sharp next week, as the Bulldogs aim to reach Murfreesboro for the first time when they visit the Smyrna Bulldogs, last year's defending state runner-up.

Smyrna is led by players who have committed with Tennessee and Vanderbilt -- Rod Wilks, a UT commit at wide receiver, and quarterback Sonny Gray, who accepted Vandy's baseball scholarship offer.

Farragut finishes the season 11-2, one win away from the deepest playoff run in school history.
