V.P. Being Tested After Doctors Found Irregular Heartbeat

(WVLT/CBS) -- Vice President Dick Cheney will return to the hospital later today for more testing in connection with an irregular heartbeat.

A represenative at the vice president's office says doctors found the problem during an examination earlier this morning after Cheney went in because of a lingering cough due to a cold.

Cheney's spokeswoman Megan Mitchell says Cheney, who has a history of heart problems, was found to have an irregular heartbeat, which on further testing was determined to be "an abnormal rhythm involving the upper chambers of the heart."

Mitchell says Cheney will visit George Washington University Hospital for further evaluation and, if indicated, cardioversion, delivery of an electric impulse to the heart, which is a standard treatment for atrial fibrillation.

This will be an outpatient procedure, and the Vice President is expected to return home Monday night.

Earlier this year, Cheney was hospitalized after doctors found a blood clot in his leg.

He's had four heart attacks, quadruple bypass surgery, two artery-clearing angioplasties, an operation to implant a defibrillator six years ago.

Just because he hasn't always made the right choices for this country doesn't mean he deserves to die. I cannot believe that people out there would wish death him. Okay, he's not the best person, but are you always perfect? No... and I don't wish death upon you because of any choices you have made. And I would be one person who would be saddened to hear he died of a heart attack. It's a sad day when all people wish upon others is death.

Obviously a pre-existing condition. If his insurance company denies medical insurance payment for the procedure, they can give the insurance reviewer a bonus for saving them a bundle. Alternative treatment may be finely aimed taser therapy. Think of it as laser taser. We all win.

Every time I hear about something like this my heart leaps a bit. As cold, calculating and opportunistic as this vice president has been, I don't think there's a person in the country who would shed a tear if the man dropped of a heart attack tomorrow.
