MARYVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Several elected officials say they support a Blount County judge who was accused of dismissing an immigrant's case because he falsely believed she was in the country illegally.
Circuit Court Judge W. Dale Young has been criticized by immigrant and civil rights groups after he dismissed Anna Calixto's request for an order of protection against her husband in September. Calixto has said the judge told her she has no rights in this country and should go back to her home country of Nicaragua.
About 125 people gathered at the Blount County Library, including Sheriff James Berrong, Maryville City Manager Greg McClain, state Representative Doug Overbey and County Mayor Jerry Cunningham. Young did not attend the rally.
