Murfreesboro (WVLT) -- The Maryville football machine rolled to its fourth straight Class AAAA state championship Saturday evening. The Rebels beat upstart Maplewood 28-13 Saturday night on the campus of Middle Tennessee State for their 60th consecutive win and 11th overall title.
Maryville got the scoring started early in the first quarter when quarterback Brent Burnette found a wide open Chris Jordan for a 17 yard touchdown. Burnette finished the game with 222 passing yards. He was 15-22 with two touchdowns.
The Governors did hang with the Rebels for much of the game, going into the locker room down 21-13. But when Maryville head coach George Quarles went to his bag of tricks late in the third quarter, it ended any hopes of a Maplewood upset. With the score still 21-13, Burnette hit wide receiver Stephen Shiver just behind the line of scrimmage, Shiver then found a wide open Shuler on the other side of the field. When all was said and done, it was a 30 yard scoring strike, giving the Rebels a two possession lead. Maplewood never threatened after that.
For the Rebels, it's their 11th football championship; that's the most in Tennessee. It's also Maryville's 7th title in 8 years--their 8th title in ten years.
