Deadly Knox Co. Love Triangle: Your Tax Dollars May Pay for Suspect's Defense

KNOXVILLE, Tenn (WVLT) Your tax dollars may be used to pay for an accused murderer's defense, if a judge agrees.

Eric McLean is charged with second degree murder in the death of Sean Powell, the teenager who prosecutors say was romantically involved with his wife Erin.

Earlier McLean claimed he was too poor to afford a defense.

At the time, Judge Ray Lee Jenkins disagreed, based on McLean's equity in his house.

When Judge Jenkins died, Judge Mary Beth Liebowitz took over the case.

Attorney Bruce Poston is asking her to reconsider, based on a new house appraisal and the fact, he says, McLean earns just over 200 dollars a week.

If the judge grants the motion, it would mean that McLean's legal fees and money for experts would come from state funds.

A hearing will be held Wednesday.
