Beshear calls for unity after divisive election

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- Governor Beshear is calling for Kentuckians of different races and from different political parties and different regions to help him meet the state's challenges.

The theme of Beshear's inauguration speech yesterday has become standard for newly elected Kentucky governors after particularly rancorous elections.

Beshear said in his inauguration speech that Kentucky has a history of overcoming division, citing the years following the Civil War when the state was split between residents siding with the Confederacy and the Union.

The governor promised that he would unify political factions and bring bipartisanship to state government.
