Knoxville sets record high again, but cold, a little snow on the way

KNOXVILLE, Tenn (WVLT) For the second day in a row, Knoxville set a record high temperature.

The record high of 71 degrees breaks the old record of 70 set in 1926.

Meanwhile, the big changes we've been talking about all week in the weather are arriving.

Pinpoint 8 Meteorologist Scott Blalock says it'll be rainy throughout much of the afternoon, evening, and late night.

Temperatures are expected to drop into the upper thirties tonight, but then rebound into the 50's tomorrow.

What is still questionable is what will happen on Saturday.

Blalock says rain is expected throughout the day, but the high should get above the 50 degree mark.

That makes it a lot less likely that we will see much, if any snow.

"We may see a brief period of rain mixed with snow in Knoxville before sunrise Sunday, ending quickly by mid-morning," Blalock says. "No accumulation is expected due to recent abnormally warm conditions."

The moisture is expected to exit as the cold air arrives during the day Sunday.

Expect gusty winds, as daytime temperatures struggle to reach 40 degrees late Sunday afternoon.

Any snow flurries on Sunday would melt on contact.

"This should dry the rain from the streets and rule out black ice for Monday morning," Blalock says.

No accumulation details are being given from the National Weather Service regarding the higher mountains of Tennessee.

However, Southeast Kentucky is expecting a dusting to a half an inch Sunday morning before the system dries up and exits.

No advisories have been issued in Kentucky or Tennessee.

The mountains of North Carolina are expecting a winter mix, then flurries with no travel hazards.
