Knoxville apartment gutted by flames

KNOXVILLE, Tenn (WVLT) A Knoxville man will have to find a new place to live after his apartment was gutted by flames Tuesday morning.

Firefighters were called to the man's apartment in the alley behind 2056 East 5th Street around 9:30 this morning.

They arrived to find the man's apartment engulfed in flames.

KFD spokesperson Capt. Brent Seymour says the apartment was basically a garage that had been converted into a small apartment.

Seymour says the man noticed his dogs acting strangely this morning and sniffing the air.

Finally, a ceiling tile fell from the ceiling, and a man noticed heavy flames in the attic.

Capt. Seymour says the man grabbed his pets and a few belongings and escaped safely.

No word yet on a cause of the fire.

KFD's Squad 4 was involved in an accident on the way to the fire but no one was injured.
