Knoxville firefighters rescue man from burning apartment

KNOXVILLE, Tenn (WVLT) -- One man is being treated for burns and smoke inhalation after an early morning apartment fire in East Knoxville.

Knoxville firefighters were called to Dodson Road just after 2 a.m. after neighbors called 911 and reported a fire.

The fire started in an apartment over top of a garage.

Firefighters say flames were coming out of the windows when they arrived, but that wasn't their main concern.

"Someone told them there was a victim in there, so they immediately went in purposefully for a search, and they found that victim almost immediately", said KFD Assistant Chief Anthony Grande.

Firefighters say the man was taken to Saint Mary's Hospital.

KFD spokesperson Capt. Brent Seymour says the victim suffered burns to his legs and side, and was suffering from smoke inhalation.

He declined to release the man's name, saying only that he was in his mid-40's.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but Capt. Seymour says it appears to be accidental.
