NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Tennessee transportation officials are suspending all highway construction projects for the holidays, beginning Friday evening.
Transportation Commissioner Gerald Nicely has told state crews and contractors to knock off work by Saturday and not resume until early on Jan. 2.
Nicely says the travel period around Christmas and New Year's Day is one of the busiest on Tennessee roads and the state doesn't want road construction to delay travelers.
The department cites Triple-A figures that estimate a million motorists will travel in or through Tennessee during the 10-day period.
Police will still enforce lowered speed limits in construction zones.
