Two NE Tennessee men charged with stealing utility cover lids

KINGSPORT, Tenn. (AP) -- Kingsport Police have arrested two men and charged them with stealing hundreds of water meter lids and selling them as scrap.

Police say 24-year-old Matthew Reynolds bought the city's stolen aluminum water meter covers from 26-year-old Steven R. Craig. Both men have been charged with theft over $1,000.

Police say Craig admitted he'd stolen hundreds of lids and sold them to Reynolds, an employee at Wise Recycling.

Kingsport police recovered 4,000 pounds worth of the stolen lids from Wise Recycling, but most were broken or unusable.

Kingsport Public Works officials say about 300 meter lids had been stolen. The lids reportedly sold as scrap for about 55 cents per pound.
