Federal budgets cuts may bankrupt Kentucky drug task forces

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) -- Funding cuts of more than $300 million are expected for drug task forces in the current federal budget. The reductions could result in the loss of four to six of the agencies in Kentucky.

According to estimates from the Kentucky Narcotics Officer's Association, national funding for the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant program is expected to be cut from $520 million to $170 million.

Tommy Loving, director of the Bowling Green-Warren County Drug Task Force and executive director of the Narcotics Officer's Association says that would be a 65 to 70 percent loss of the $25 million received by task forces.
