Sevier County (WVLT) – Sevierville Police are investigating a rash of purse thefts over the last several days.
According to investigators, nine purses have been reported stolen in the city since Saturday.
“Almost all of these thefts were from shopping carts,” said Lt. Sam Hinson of the SPD. “The victims often turned away from their purses for just a brief moment, allowing the thief to grab the entire purse or reach in and remove a wallet or checkbook.”
The thefts have occurred in retail stores, grocery stores and restaurants.
Police suggest that you never leave your purse unattended and when you are shopping with a cart, close up all its pockets.
Additionally, they say if the cart has an infant seat belt or strap, you should loop it around your purse to secure it.
Finally, the police say if you are walking with your purse, use the strap to wrap it around your shoulder.
