MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- An off-duty deputy shopping at an adult bookstore shot and killed a would-be robber this weekend.
Police say 22 -year-old Lamon McDowell tried to rob the Fantasy Warehouse at gunpoint at about 10:20 a.m. on Saturday.
Gary Gadd, an off-duty Shelby County deputy overheard McDowell demanding money. He identified himself and told McDowell to drop his weapon.
McDowell shot in Gadd's direction but missed. Gadd fired back, hitting McDowell.
The clerk and other patrons were uninjured.
A sheriff's spokesman says Gadd did not violate any policies by shopping at the bookstore.
