LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Last year brought the highest number of murders in Louisville since the city and county governments merged five years ago.
The city recorded 81 murders in 2007, a jump of 26 over the previous year.
Louisville Police Chief Robert White says there were various motives behind the slayings, including arguments over drugs, domestic violence and robberies.
Police have solved two-thirds of the killings, with 24 in which no arrests have been made.
