Some snow, bitter cold temperatures in East Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn (WVLT) Some East Tennesseans woke up to some snow on just the second day of 2008. Some snow, but not much.

The most snow can be found in the higher elevations of Sevier County, Claiborne County, and Campbell County.

Some areas of the Tennessee Valley got a trace, but most woke up to green grass.

WYMT-TV's Michael Phillips is reporting 1 to 2 inches of snow in the city limits of Hazard and up to 4 inches in some of the higher elevations.

WYMT-TV Cumberland County Bureau Chief Jeff Allen is reporting 1-2 inches of snow in Middlesboro in Bell County.

Volunteer TV Blount/Sevier Bureau Chief Stephen McLamb is in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park today. He reports about a half to three quarters of an inch of snow at the Sugarlands Nature Center.

Highway 441 is closed through the Smokies, and some of the highest areas of the Smokies received several inches of snow and ice.

McLamb also says Ober Gatlinburg is making snow, and they are open to skiers after being closed for several days.

Volunteer TV photographer Herb Goss is reporting about a half inch of snow on the ground in Campbell County.

TDOT lists I-75 near Jellico Mountain as being slippery in some spots, but the Campbell County Sheriff's Department and the Tennessee Highway Patrol says although there were a few wrecks Wednesday morning, the highway is open.

Temperatures across East Tennessee are not expected to get out of the 20's today. Lows tonight will be bitter, around 15. Tomorrow, temperatures will rise to the mid 30's, but lows will agin be around the mid teens.

Volunteer TV Meteorologist Craig Edwards is predicting high temperatures in the mid 50's by Sunday and lower 60's next week.
