GATLINBURG, Tenn. (AP) -- The National Park Service has reopened U.S. 441 between Gatlinburg, Tenn., and Cherokee, N.C.
A park spokesman says it may be necessary to close the road -- also called Newfound Gap Road -- again Thursday evening if areas that are now wet freeze again.
Road crews sanded icy spots and the sun melted much of it in areas that aren't shaded, allowing officials to open the road about 1:15 p.m.
Travelers can get updated information by calling the park's automated information line at (865) 436-1200.
