Search on for big rig involved in hit and run of Tennessee trooper

KNOXVILLE, Tenn (WVLT) -- The Tennessee Highway Patrol is searching for any information on a tractor trailer that hit a trooper's vehicle Saturday, but did not stop.

The accident happened on Interstate 75 near mile marker 42 around 11:30 p.m.

THP spokesperson Mike Browning says Trooper Charles Melhorn had just helped a motorist secure a loose tail pipe and was sitting in his patrol car when a passing tractor trailer hit the still open car door and ripped it off it's hinges.

Police say the vehicle was off the road and had it's blue lights flashing, but the big rig driver did not slow down.

Tpr. Melhorn was not injured.

Police are looking for a Western Express truck with a white trailer and a dark-colored, possible blue or black, cab.

It should have damage to its right side.

Mabye the trooper could have closed his car door instead of leaving it hanging open in the traffic lane in the dark of night. Poor decision on the part of LEO. Blame the truck who probably didn't notice anything... felt like a tar strip on a Tennesse highway to him.
