CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- A 9-year-old Chattanooga boy has been charged after he allegedly took an unloaded gun to school and showed it to several of his classmates.
Police said one of the boy's classmates at East Brainerd Elementary School told a teacher about the gun and the boy handed it over without incident Monday morning.
A police statement said the handgun belonged to a relative. The boy's mother said she checks his backpack every morning to make sure he has his books and the gun was not in there when she checked Monday.
Administrators said the boy has no history of discipline problems. He was taken to a juvenile detention center to be charged with unlawful possession of a weapon.
