KINGSPORT, Tenn. (AP) -- A Tennessee state trooper involved in a fatal motorcycle chase that ended in Virginia faces dismissal over mishandled evidence and citations in other cases.
The state Department of Safety conducted an internal investigation of Trooper Kyle Cantwell's adherence to policies and general orders while the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation looked into the Aug. 19 fatal chase that killed motorcyclist Justin Thompson of Kingsport.
Authorities determined the crash resulted from Thompson's excessive speed, but investigators also found Cantwell committed five procedural errors. A nine-day suspension without pay was recommended.
Cantwell, however, continues to work in the Washington County driver's license station pending an appeal.
Authorities say they found Cantwell mishandled evidence and often failed to turn in citations for prosecution.
