East Tennesee lawmaker breaks leg while fighting fire

ETOWAH, Tenn. (AP) -- A Tennessee lawmaker who is also a volunteer firefighter is recovering after he broke his leg in a fall while helping fight a fire over the weekend.

State Rep. Mike Bell of Riceville went home Monday from a Cleveland hospital where he was taken after the accident Saturday.

Bell is a volunteer with Claxton Volunteer Emergency Services and said he was hurt in "kind of a freak accident" while unloading hose from a truck.

The hose caught on something, tightened and swept him off his feet, breaking his femur near his hip. The 44-year-old Bell said he and his partner were on standby at the fire in a neighboring district.

The Republican representative's district includes McMinn and Monroe counties. He said he hoped to return to Nashville for the legislative session by next week.
