UPDATE: NIU gunman kills 4 and himself

DEKALB, Ill. (AP) -- Authorities say a man dressed in black opened fire from a stage of a lecture hall at Northern Illinois University, killing four people and himself.

Campus Police Chief Donald Grady confirmed the deaths following a news conference. He says the gunman was not a student at the school and police had no apparent motive.

The university president says witnesses in the geology class saw someone dressed in black came out from behind a screen in front of the classroom and opened fire with a shotgun.

All classes were canceled Thursday night and the 25,000-student campus was closed on Friday.

DEKALB, Ill. (AP) -- Northern Illinois University says the gunman who opened fire in a lecture hall injuring several people has killed himself.

The school's Web site says police are confirming that the shooter is dead by a self-inflicted gunshot.

Kishwaukee Community Hospital spokeswoman says it received 17 victims all with wounds from the shooting or flying debris, including three with serious injuries. She says she knows of no deaths at the hospital.

Witnesses say the young gunman carried a shotgun and a pistol. One student says the gunman appeared to target students in one part of the lecture hall when the shooting started around 3 p.m.

All classes were canceled Thursday night and the 25,000-student campus was closed on Friday.

DE KALB, Ill (CBS) ― At least three people have been shot on the Northern Illinois University campus. The school is now on lock down after reports of shots being fired on campus.

DeKalb police reports at least three people have been shot at Cole Hall. There are several ambulances on the scene. The incident apparently happened around 3:15 p.m.

"Police are trying to get everyone off campus,'' said student David Healy, who was near Cole Hall when the shooting happened. "At least five people have been pulled out on stretchers."

The Northern Illinois University website is reporting a possible gunman on campus. The website message is urging all students and faculty to take cover and get to a secure location.

The message urges everybody to avoid the the King Commons and all buildings in the vicinity.
