BREAKING NEWS: Sixth student dies in Northern Illinois University shooting

DEKALB, Ill. (AP) -- An Illinois coroner says the death toll in the Northern Illinois University shooting has risen to seven, including the gunman.

One Northern Illinois University student says she dropped to the floor, thinking she was going to die.

A former graduate student dressed in black had walked onto the stage of a lecture hall and opened fire on a packed science class. Desiree Smith, a senior journalism major, says students were crawling on each other to get away from the shooter who killed six students and wounded 16 others.

Minutes after the shooting erupted, many students say they phoned each other and sent text messages even before school officials could warn them. The school Web site announced a possible gunman on campus within 20 minutes of the shots and locked down the campus.

Police say they have no motive for the rapid-fire assault, which was carried out with a shotgun and two handguns. The student is said to have been a former graduate student.

Classes have been canceled on the campus of 25,000. It's in DeKalb, about 65 miles west of Chicago.
