Man to serve 9 years for TSU student traffic death

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A man charged in the death of a Tennessee State University student has pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide by intoxication.

Twenty-four-year-old Victor Benitez, an illegal immigrant from Mexico, was sentenced Thursday in Davidson County Criminal Court to nine years in prison for the June 2007 death of 22-year-old Joycelyn Gardiner.

Police said his car collided with hers at a south Nashville intersection.

Gardiner was a member of the Tennessee State track team and was scheduled to graduate just weeks after her death.
