FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- Some 1,500 coal miners are staging a mass rally on the front lawn of the state Capitol to protest legislation that they fear could eliminate their jobs.
The rally on Thursday came two days after lawmakers defeated a bill aimed at stopping mining companies from blasting off mountaintops to expose coal deposits.
Gov. Steve Beshear made a brief appearance at the rally to pledge his support to the miners. So did a number of mountain lawmakers including House Majority Floor Leader Rocky Adkins.
Coal miner Rocky Coleman of Kemper said the rally is intended to show lawmakers that Kentuckians strongly oppose any legislation that would hurt the industry.
