Paterson prepares for unexpected role as governor of New York

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- New York Lieutenant Governor David Paterson will be sworn in Monday as the state's 55th governor.

Just a week after the world learned of Governor Eliot Spitzer's involvement in a prostitution ring, Paterson will become the state's first black governor. He's also the nation's first legally blind chief executive to serve more than a few days.

Spitzer is scheduled to officially resign at noon. Paterson takes over an hour later before a joint session of the Legislature.
