NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A man charged with the 1975 rape and slaying of a Vanderbilt student will go to trial on Oct. 6.
Prosecutors said Thursday that 60-year-old Jerome Sydney Barrett will be tried on a first-degree murder charge.
Nashville Police's Cold Case unit arrested Thurman in November after they say new scientific evidence developed linked Barrett to the death of 19-year-old Sarah Vanetta Des Prez.
Authorities say Barrett was living in Memphis when he was arrested based on DNA found in the bedding that matched a sample police obtained from him.
Barrett previously served 26 years for the rape of a Belmont student and was released in 2002.
